Specifying seating for a Singapore cleanroom involves two compliance frameworks that most chair suppliers address separately — if at all. ISO 14644 governs cleanroom classification and contamination control. Singapore’s MOM Workplace Safety and Health regulations govern ergonomic risk at assembly workstations. A chair that satisfies one and not the other creates an audit exposure on the other front.
What ISO 14644 Requires From Cleanroom Seating
ISO 14644 doesn’t specify chair models — it specifies the outcome: particle generation within the cleanroom must not exceed the limits for the classified area. For seating, this means:
- Non-shedding materials: Seat and back materials must not release fibres. Fabric upholstery is not appropriate below ISO 7. Vinyl or sealed polyurethane surfaces are standard for ISO 5–7.
- Chemical compatibility: Surfaces must withstand routine disinfection with IPA, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, and quaternary ammonia without degrading or off-gassing.
- No particle traps: No fabric seams, tufted surfaces, or recessed grooves where particles accumulate and re-release during sitting.
- ESD casters in EPAs: In ESD Protected Areas, casters must be ESD-dissipative or conductive within ANSI/ESD STM 12.1 limits.
What MOM WSH Requires at Electronics Assembly Workstations
Under Singapore’s WSH (Risk Management) Regulations 2006, employers must identify and control ergonomic risks. For seated assembly operators, this includes seat height adjustability for different operator heights, backrest support for operators seated more than two hours continuously, footrest provisions at elevated workbench heights, and anti-fatigue considerations for operators alternating between sitting and standing.
A chair that satisfies ISO cleanroom requirements but has fixed height and no backrest will not adequately address MOM WSH ergonomic risk — creating potential liability under the WSH Act.
Bimos Chairs: ISO 14644 and MOM WSH in One Specification
| Requirement | Bimos Specification |
|---|---|
| ISO Class rating | Class 4 to Class 8 depending on model |
| Upholstery | Sealed PU or vinyl — no fabric, no shedding |
| Chemical resistance | IPA, bleach, H2O2, quaternary ammonia compatible |
| Height adjustment | Pneumatic, continuously adjustable |
| ESD option | Conductive and dissipative casters, drag chain available |
| Backrest | Adjustable lumbar support standard on production models |
The Drag Chain Question
ESD drag chains provide a continuous ground path from the chair to the floor, independent of caster contact. They are required when the floor may not maintain consistent contact with conductive casters — for example, on highly polished ESD vinyl. If your EPA uses a flooring system rated for dissipative casters, drag chains provide additional assurance at minimal cost. When in doubt, specify them.
Why Local Stock Matters for Cleanroom Seating
Bimos chairs are European-manufactured to precision specifications. Overseas lead times of 8–12 weeks are common when ordered direct. Phil Industries holds Singapore stock of core Bimos models, enabling same-week delivery for urgent requirements and clear-cut warranty support without cross-border logistics.
