What the EN 407 rating 412X4X means
EN 407 grades a glove on six heat hazards. Each digit below is a performance level from 1 to 4, and an X means the manufacturer did not test that hazard.
- 4 – Burning behaviour: the highest level, so the leather resists ignition and after-flame.
- 1 – Contact heat: rated for 100 °C for 15 seconds, so treat it as a light hot-handling glove, not a furnace glove.
- 2 – Convective heat: a moderate rating, because thin sheepskin transfers heat faster than thick split leather.
- X – Radiant heat: not tested, so do not rely on it for radiant-heat work.
- 4 – Small splashes of molten metal: the highest level, which suits the small spatter typical of TIG.
- X – Large quantities of molten metal: not tested, so choose a heavier gauntlet for casting or foundry work.
What the EN 388 rating 2111X means
EN 388:2016 covers mechanical hazards, and a TIG glove is deliberately thin. As a result, the Tigmaster carries modest mechanical levels: abrasion 2, coupe blade cut 1, tear 1 and puncture 1. The final X shows the ISO 13997 cut test was not applied. In short, it is a welding gauntlet first and a light mechanical-handling glove second.
Why TIG welders choose a Type B welding gauntlet
EN 12477 splits welding gloves into two types. Type A gloves use thicker leather for MIG, MMA and heavy spatter, whereas Type B gloves use thinner leather for TIG, where you feed filler rod by feel. Therefore the Tigmaster keeps the fingers supple and the palm grippy, while the long cuff still shields the wrist and forearm from arc heat. For example, a fabricator running stainless-steel TIG all shift gets less hand fatigue than with a stiff Type A gauntlet.

How much heat can the glove take?
The EN 407 contact-heat level is 1, which means 100 °C for 15 seconds. Therefore it is fine for brief handling of warm parts, but not for prolonged contact with hot metal.
What size does it come in?
Polyco supplies the Tigmaster LMW124 in size 10 only. However, the soft sheepskin conforms to the hand, so most welders find it comfortable.
How should I store and inspect it?
Store the gloves dry and away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. In addition, inspect each pair before use, and discard any glove with burns, holes or hardened leather.
