The short answer: 316 contains molybdenum and 304 does not. That single difference decides which grade belongs inside your aseptic process zone.

Why molybdenum matters

Molybdenum gives 316 much stronger resistance to chlorides and to the sterilisation chemistry used in aseptic areas — Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP), hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and liquid disinfectants. Tools in these zones face that chemistry repeatedly, cycle after cycle. Grade 304 pits and stains under the same exposure.

Where each grade belongs

Grade 304 is fine for general, lower-exposure areas — gowning rooms, corridors, warehouse work. Grade 316 is the grade to specify for anything used inside the aseptic process zone. Phil Industries supplies its cleanroom hand tool range exclusively in 316 for that reason.

Yes — 316 stainless steel tools are fully autoclavable. They are validated for thousands of steam-sterilisation cycles, typically at 132°C.

What they tolerate

Beyond steam, the passivated 316 surface stands up to Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP), hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid and the liquid disinfectants used in routine cleanroom sanitisation. The tools are solid stainless throughout, with no coating or plating to blister, flake or shed particles into your environment.

Getting the full service life

Clean each tool after use to remove residues and fingerprints, dry it thoroughly, and store it away from carbon-steel tools. Ferrous contact is the most common cause of staining on stainless tools that are otherwise well maintained.

No. Stainless steel cleanroom tools are not intended for high-torque fastening. Grade 316 is optimised for corrosion resistance, not for strength.

What they are built for

These tools suit low-torque work inside controlled environments — cleanroom assembly, equipment adjustment and routine maintenance. Used within that range, they last for years of sterilisation cycles.

What damages them

Overloading a 316 wrench or hex key can round the drive or deform the tool. Never use them to strike or pry either. Where a joint genuinely needs controlled high torque, use a calibrated torque tool rated for the job and keep the 316 set for the work it was made for.

Documentation you receive

Every delivery includes three documents: an EN 10204 3.1 material certificate carrying the heat number and full 316 composition, a LOT-referenced Certificate of Conformance, and a passivation certificate to ASTM A967. Together they give you material traceability back to the melt and evidence that passivation was actually performed. Keep all three on file — they are what an auditor asks for when your tooling comes up during a GMP or ISO review.

Standards the range meets

The tools meet recognised standards including ANSI/AAMI ST79, DIN 285, DIN 58950 Pharma, ISO 11345 and FDA 21 CFR cGMP. They are non-magnetic, chemically passivated and suited to GMP cleanroom, aseptic and sterile-process environments.

Wrenches, hex keys and drivers are supplied across common metric sizes, made to order. We do not hold fixed SKUs for this range.

What the range covers

Combination wrenches with an open jaw one end and a ring the other, open-end wrenches, ball-end ‘L’ hex keys for reaching fasteners at an angle, and straight hex drivers on request. Each is machined from solid 316 stainless steel.
